Mulder Breakdown

Welcome to my Mark Mulder page.  Mark has quickly grownginto one of the better pitchers in baseball. After going 21-8 with a 3.45 ERA, Mulder came in second in the 2001 Cy Young voting.  He got 2 first place votes, gaining 68 total points in the voting.  Though Mulder had much better stats all around than Clemens, he had to take a back seat to the NY bandwaggon.  Congrats anyways Mark! We all know you deserved it over Clemens!  Mark improved his ERA almost 2 full runs over the previous season.  He had less walks in 75 more innings.  Opponents on base average was more than 80 point less, slugging more than 140 points less, and batting average almost 60 points less!  Mulder allowed 2.5 less hits per 9 innings, half as many walks per 9, and almost 2 more strikeouts per 9.  Mark was out due to injury for the last part of the 2000 season, but his improvement during the 2001 season more than made up for it.

During the 2002 season, despite being on the DL for  almost a month, Mark ended up with a record of 19-7 and a 3.47 ERA. He followed up his Cy Younger runner up season with another excellent season. His 19 wins were good for 4th in the American League and his 3.47 ERA was good for 10th best in the league.

9/26/01 - Mulder signed a contract extension keeping him with the A's through the 2005 season.  The contract is worth a reported $14.2 million, and with incentives and options, could be worth $23.45 million over five years.  Read all about it here.  A nice reward for winning your 20th! Congrats Mark!
